Electric Shock
Definition
The passage of an electrical current through the body that can cause cardiac
arrest, burning and shock.
Action Plan
Never touch the casualty with bare hands unless you are certain that there
will be no danger to yourself. If possible switch off the electricity supply.
Then remove the casualty from the electrical source using a non-conductive
material such as a dry brush handle, dry rope or a piece of clothing. If the
patient’s breathing and heartbeat have stopped begin resuscitation
immediately. If the patient is breathing but unconscious put them in the
recovery position. Treat any burns they may have and treat them for shock. In
all cases the casualty must be taken to hospital.
