Background
Indian head massage is also known as 'champissage'. It has been practiced in India for well over a thousand years.
What can be treated ?
It is extremely effective for stress and emotional tensions, headaches, eye strain and neck stiffness. . It is also an effective treatment for sinus problems, insomnia, neck pains, and ridding the body of waste products via the lymphatics. Toxins will be dispersed and blood circulation, chi flow and lymphatic drainage can be improved
What does the treatment involve ?
Performed in a sitting position it involves massage of the upper back, neck and shoulders, the upper arms, scalp and face. Following treatment a recipient will experience the benefits of a full body massage.
Deep thumb and finger pressure, friction, stroking and the laying on of hands are all techniques used. Sleep quality may improve after treatment. The massage will improve hair quality and hair loss, having deeply nourished the hair roots. Oils such as sesame, almond, olive or coconut will improve the lustre of the hair. The massage generally takes about one hour and subsequent treatment 40 minutes.
Is it safe ?
As it involves gentle massage it is considered safe.
What is the evidence ?
Anecdotal but it is well reported that massage therapies are effective in musculo- skeletal conditions.
Qualifications
The qualification is run by VTCT (Vocational Training Charitable Trust), it belongs to a group of qualifications under IIHHT (International Institute Of Health And Holistic Therapies) as does the Diploma in Aromatherapy and Diploma in Reflexology.
The Title of the qualification is Indian Head Massage Diploma. It is offered at Grimsby College, Nuns Corner, Grimsby as a progression to students who already hold a Certificate in Body Massage (IIHHT).
How to find a qualified therapist
A therapist of the Indian head massage should be sensitive and understanding. Check your practitioner is a qualified aromatherapist or body masseur or an holistic practitioner versed in anatomy and physiology.
